Vascular Surgeon Named to Prestigious Academic Surgical Association

ALBANY, N.Y., April 29, 2010-R. Clement Darling, III, M.D., vascular surgeon, professor of surgery and chief of the division of vascular surgery has been accepted into the American Surgical Association, the oldest and most prestigious academic surgery association. Membership in the society is highly selective and members include the world's most prominent surgeons, many of whom head the departments of surgery at leading academic medical institutions.

Dr. Darling, who has been with Albany Medical College since the early 1990s, is an internationally recognized vascular surgeon and academician, a member of numerous organizations, and has published hundreds of papers on vascular surgical techniques.

"This is a rare honor given to the most accomplished academic surgeons. Given his impeccable credentials, Dr. Darling is a natural choice for such a distinction," said Steven Stain, M.D., chair of surgery at Albany Medical College and chief of surgery at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Dr. Darling is a founding member of The Vascular Group, PLLC, which is affiliated with Albany Med and located in the Medical Center's Physicians Pavilion. The group is one of the largest providers of care for vascular disease in the nation, and the largest in the northeast. Its members teach numerous medical students and residents and are visited regularly by colleagues worldwide.

Dr. Darling received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati Medical College and performed a surgical residency at the Harvard/Deaconess Surgical Service in Boston. He completed a vascular fellowship at Albany Medical Center in 1991. Among his many professional pursuits, he currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Society for Vascular Surgery, is the Chair of the Society for Vascular Surgery Communications Committee, and is past president of the Eastern Vascular Society and the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society.

Other Albany Med-affiliated surgeons who have been elected to the prestigious society include Dr. Stain, Dhiraj Shah, M.D., Neil Lempert, M.D., Harvey Bernard, M.D., and Robert Leather, M.D.

Albany Medical Center is northeastern New York's only academic health sciences center. It consists of Albany Medical College, Albany Medical Center Hospital and the Albany Medical Center Foundation, Inc. Additional information about Albany Medical Center can be found at
